Powerhouse – We Dream the City

by on May.29, 2022, under Photography

New at this years Vivid Sydney is a set of installations along the length of the Goods Line Walk. This runs from near the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo through the University of Technology Sydney Haymarket Campus to George St

At the Powerhouse Museum end we have this installation titled We Dream the City

NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S @ 14 mm, 1/4 sec at f/5, ISO 2000 x 108 Frames

Fragments of lost worlds and forgotten faces flicker across the back of the Powerhouse Museum, animating visions of our city streets through time. As you stroll past, the projections become a 130m long meditation on the many ideals, innovations and transformations that have shaped Sydney in its emergence as a modern metropolis. We Dream invites us to reflect on how we are collectively shaping the future of the urban realm

Unwins Stores – Vivid Sydney 2022

by on May.29, 2022, under Photography

All the usual favourites are back, but there’s also a whole bunch of new city locations being lit up at night. Here’s a sneak peek at one of them. This is Unwins Stores on George St in The Rocks

NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S @ 14 mm, 1/8 sec at f/5.6, ISO 800 x 26 Frames

This installation is titled “One Big Backyard“. It explores the ties that bind us – the people, the places, the stories of Sydney – in a celebration of the city’s soul

Vivid House

Vivid House

NIKON Z 7 + 12 mm f/2.8 @ 12 mm, 1/320 sec at f/4, ISO 1600

Do yourself a favour. If you are or are thinking of visiting Vivid Sydney; get yourself down to Vivid House in Darling Quarter at the eastern edge of Tumbalong Park next to the ICC

Imagine if you will, that you were going to build the most INSANE home theatre setup…

Well you’d put in a whole wall TV – obviously; except in this instance you’d make the LED screen over 5 metres tall and 10 metres wide. Of course you wouldn’t stop there – you do it on all four walls of the room so you’re completely surrounded! Then you’d put a bunch of projectors on the ceiling so they’d project across the whole floor as well. Next you’d put computer controlled motion lighting systems… well… everywhere – dozens and dozens of systems above and also hanging from the ceiling, around the bottom of the walls, hell under and coming up from the floor. Smoke machines in the floor – hell yes – tick. The most kick ass sound system with dozens and dozens of speakers… again everywhere including under the floor – tick 🙂

Vivid House

NIKON Z 7 + 12 mm f/2.8 @ 12 mm, 1/400 sec at f/4 @ ISO 2000 to 1 sec at f/5.6 @ ISO 64 x 112 Frames

Note: These photographs (especially the wider shots) look much better when larger. To see larger versions in an inline overlay slideshow gallery viewer click any of the images.

Ancient Worlds

Ancient Worlds

NIKON Z 7 + 12 mm f/2.8 @ 12 mm, 1/160 sec at f/4, ISO 1000

This is what the crazy genius wizards at Technical Direction Company bring you – combining for an insane immersive light and sound experience in Vivid House

Progressum

Progressum

NIKON Z 7 + 12 mm f/2.8 @ 12 mm, 1/100 sec at f/4, ISO 2000

There are five different sets of content on offer in here, and each runs for approximately 5 to 10 minutes

Game Over

Game Over

NIKON Z 7 + 12 mm f/2.8 @ 12 mm, 1/160 sec at f/4, ISO 2000

If you want the full experience I’d suggest Progressum as my pick – it’s dark, moody and all encompassing, and uses the space and technology to it’s fullest

If rave, techno and house music party is your scene then Temple of Joy fits the bill. This will be a kids favourite too with it’s bright colours, shapes and action

Three five minute sequences form part of Floating World

Sub-Aqua – Ancient Worlds explores an ancient underworld; Agora also gives you a mysterious marine underwater experience

Lastly Soup provides an awesome artistic treat – another of my personal favourites

I’ll post an animated sequence of selected images across all five sets of content soon…
